- Personally I don't really care what chip NeXTstep runs on. I don't even
- care if NeXT makes another machine. The future of computers is Operating
- Systems, not hardware. There are tons of people out there making
- hardware, but the OS is the most important part. I think that NeXT going
- to an Intel Chip is a good idea. I would like to see NeXT go up against
- Microsoft (Windows NT), IBM(OS/2), and Sun(Solaris) head on. If NeXT has
- any skill at marketing (which they don't right now) and strategic skill
- they could actually pull of the computing upset of the last 2 decades.
-
- NeXT should actually quit the hardware business and specialize in
- software. Hardware companies are just commodities these days, ask SUN
- about that, SUN knows that there is no money in hardware these days, it's
- in the OS. Besides, the hardware business is too competitive for a new
- company like NeXT. If IBM is having trouble selling machines, NeXT
- doesn't have a chance in hell.
-
- NeXT should just focus on NeXTstep. NeXTstep for Intel chips is the first
- step in the right direction. The next port should be to SPARC chips. I
- was reading a Workstation magazine the other day, and Hyundai has a new
- line of Workstations out that would be great for NeXTstep, the article
- even said that they modeled their machines after the NeXT look and feel.
- SPARC is definitely a port that needs to be done. With a SPARC port, I
- could see SUNsoft going out of Business pretty soon.
-
- NeXT should try to put NeXTstep on every piece of hardware they can get.
- If they don't Microsoft will. Here is the order in which they should
- port.
-
- 1) Intel in the bag
- 2) SPARC a lot of machines
- 3) RS/6000 IBM will be begging
- 3) Alpha SGI + NeXTstep wow!
- 4) PA-RISC HP's hardware is the best / $
- 5) Power PC Take over the entire desktop mkt.
-
- NeXT has the opportunity to do what Microsoft wants to do, but with a 5
- year lead. If NeXT has any kind of balls at all, 75% of all machines,
- from Mini's to Desktops, should be running NeXTstep.
-
- If Jobs is the Visionary that I thought he was he'll take a chance on the
- OS.
