- This reminds me of The Night Two DTS Engineers Went Stupid. Several years
- ago, I was trying to track down the same thing: why was my system heap so
- damn big? I laboriously unloaded and loaded INITs and rebooted, keeping
- careful track of how much memory each INIT used up. After stripping my
- system down to the bones, my heap was still larger than what I expected.
- Comparing it with they system heap size of a co-worker's machine, I
- determined that something was very wrong. My heap size was much larger than
- his, and he had more INITs installed.
-
- I then tried futzing with hardware and low-level software. I updated the
- driver on my hard disk. I started removing NuBUS cards. I swapped monitors
- around. My heap size was still larger than my friend's.
-
- We then prepared a bootable floppy disk (ah, the days of system 6.0.x...)
- and went around to many of the Macs in our offices, booting them up with
- the floppy and checking the system heap size. You'd think that they'd all
- be the same size (or very close), but they varied wildly! Finally, it
- dawned on both of us at the same time...
-
- ...it was the RAM cache.
-
- Mine was up around 768K or 1024K to help deal with MacApp compiles.
- Everyone else's was around 128K, 192K, or 256K.
