  34. This reminds me of The Night Two DTS Engineers Went Stupid. Several years
  35. ago, I was trying to track down the same thing: why was my system heap so
  36. damn big? I laboriously unloaded and loaded INITs and rebooted, keeping
  37. careful track of how much memory each INIT used up. After stripping my
  38. system down to the bones, my heap was still larger than what I expected.
  39. Comparing it with they system heap size of a co-worker's machine, I
  40. determined that something was very wrong. My heap size was much larger than
  41. his, and he had more INITs installed.

  43. I then tried futzing with hardware and low-level software. I updated the
  44. driver on my hard disk. I started removing NuBUS cards. I swapped monitors
  45. around. My heap size was still larger than my friend's.
  46.  
  47. We then prepared a bootable floppy disk (ah, the days of system 6.0.x...)
  48. and went around to many of the Macs in our offices, booting them up with
  49. the floppy and checking the system heap size. You'd think that they'd all
  50. be the same size (or very close), but they varied wildly! Finally, it
  51. dawned on both of us at the same time...

  53. ...it was the RAM cache.

  55. Mine was up around 768K or 1024K to help deal with MacApp compiles.
  56. Everyone else's was around 128K, 192K, or 256K.
