- An acquaintance recently managed to fry the ADB ports on her IIcx. She took
- the machine into an official Apple service center. The repairman ran the
- usual diagnostics: yep, board dead. Swap-out. $480 for a new board. No
- surprises there, no real gripes: I'm used to it.
-
- However, when I suggested that I might want to do a component-level fix, the
- service rep was friendly, but added the caveat that Apple would not accept
- the trade-in, and the price would go up "a bit," if future work had to be
- done. My reaction was, "okay, a couple hundred dollars, right?" thinking of
- policy around the time the 512->Plus conversion was going on (i.e.: get to
- keep the 512 motherboard for another couple hundred bucks). NO. The
- damage:
- $2800.
- No typos, no extra zeroes, there. Two thousand, eight hundred dollars. More
- than a IIsi, Performa 600, or IIci box!
-
-
- Can anyone suggest ONE good reason for this disparity, considering that it
- cost Apple about ten bucks to make one of these things, that they make a
- tremendous profit even at $480, and that they just junk exchanged boards? It
- would seem to penalize those users who are MOST loyal to the product line, who
- might ultimately NEED to buy a replacement board (for whatever reason)...
-
-
- Incidentally, the repairman noted that Apple had refused to honor swap-
- ins of "obvious" power supply repairs, too... I didn't ask him how
- much a toaster analog board would go for: probably $1500. :-(
