- Pretty much. Right now Flopticals and read/write optical discs are too
- slow to use with direct to disk systems. I think Akai produces a stand-alone
- system that stores sound data on 5 1/2 inch optical disks, but I don't know
- how they do it. The optical drives that are available for the Mac (like
- 3 1/2 inch 128 MB drives) aren't fast enough for recording. Also 128MB is
- too small for any serious work. And 21MB flopticals are all but useless.
- I think the ideal setup would be a really fast gigabyte hard drive, and
- a 5 1/2 inch optical disk to back up onto (they're faster than tape drives
- at least).
- Someone mentioned the NeXT Direct to disk system; does anybody have
- experience with, or know more about it? What about the Atari Falcon?
- Supposedly it will do 8-track direct to disk with help from a built in
- Motorolla 56001. If you have a working setup, I am interested to know
- about it, because I'm thinking about getting a D2D system.
