- After looking for several alternatives, I decided to buy the LaCie Quantum 240
- LPS. I have IIci's with 80 MB internal drives in the office and at home and
- wanted to install an internal 240 at home and take out the 80 to use as an
- external drive for my machine at work for which I wanted to buy a case. The
- cheapest case, however was around $115, with shipment. And all the cases I
- found were zero foot print cases that lie flat, while I wanted a small case that
- could stand on its edge. The nicest one I could find was the LaCie Cirrus,
- small and elegant.
-
- When the 240 Cirrus arrived on Thursday evening, I called LaCie to find out how
- to open the case -- there are "buttons" that cover the screws that hold the two
- sides of the case together. Of course the LaCie people said that I would void
- the guarantee if I opened the case. The reality, however, is that the whole
- operation is so simple that, if ever anything goes wrong with the drive, one can
- reinstall it in the case, and LaCie or Quantum wont know that the case was ever
- opened. Let's get seriuos!
-
- Taking out and switching the two drives was trivial, particularly as the 80 MB
- drive in my IIci was also a Quantum. The only thing that I had to do was to
- remove the terminator resistors from the internal 80 and plug them into the 240
- that was going into the IIci. The other major (really minor) thing is that the
- Quantum, being an older drive, use different size plugs for the little cable
- that the Cirrus case to allow the user to change the SCSI address. I left the
- cable off and used Silver Lining to change the SCSI address of the 80 from 0 to
- 1, so that it wouldn't clash with that of the internal drive in my office
- machine -- internal hard disks are 0. Also, the plug for the light was
- different on the old Quantum 80, so I had to leave that off too.
-
- All this was extre, ely easy and now I have 240 MB at home and 160 MB in the
- office in the form of two Quantum 80s.
