- Subject: [*] DiskParam
-
- Recently, I posted a copy of DiskParam but forgot to include the
- documentation. Here is a resubmission with documentation...
-
- DiskParam is a program that can reset the PRAM (Control Panel Settings) to
- standard defaults at startup. Once you have the settings the way you like,
- just lock the Param file created by DiskParam. This way, users can change
- PRAM settings the way they like, but they all go back to your defaults on
- next restart. I have only tested it thoroughly on Mac Plus and Mac SE
- computers in our lab. It seems to work alright on other models as well.
-
- I have found one obscure problem that prevents it from being useful on a
- machine that is running MacTCP *and* is running from a completely locked
- disk (this is the case with a file transfer Mac we have in a public area).

- DMM LW 5/6 Stuff v. 1.3.1 is a FREEWARE supplement to the DMM LW 7.x Stuff
- package tailored to users of older System 6 LaserWriter drivers. The included
- goodies and documentation explain how to get the most out of these older
- LaserWriter drivers and allow you to incorporate many of the features that
- DMM LW 7.x Stuff makes available to System 7 LaserWriter driver users:
-
- - Non-conflicting drivers that work in harmony with other versions of the
- LaserWriter driver--eliminating the dreaded "Printer Reset" wars of
- incompatible driver versions.
-
- - Generation of safe, portable, and embeddable PostScript code that is
- suitable for printing without modification even on non-Apple printers.
- Throw away that outdated macps!
-
- - The ability to build Serial LaserWriter drivers which talk
- asynchronously
- through the Modem or Printer Serial Port rather than using AppleTalk.
-
- - N-up thumbnail printing support built right into the driver.
-
- - A PostScript file checkbox right in the Print dialog.
-
- New at version 1.3.1:
-
- - Corrected a problem introduced at version 1.3 having to do with
- embedding
- generated PostScript in other documents which would not work when
- printed
- to certain printers.
-
- DMM LW 5/6 Stuff is distributed as a Compact Pro self-extracting archive.

- files.
-
- - Additional features which make muliple file encryption and decryptiong

-
- - Some minor bug fixes in the user interface.
-
- - Resource forks can now be encrypted (including applications).
-
- This version of enigma is compatible with the 512Ke and new macintoshes. It
- is system 7 friendly and has been tested on systems as early as 5.3 and should
- work on earlier systems as well. It requires only about 256K of ram.
-
- This version of enigma is freeware with this caveat: US export law does not
- allow the export of DES outside of the united states. Therefore this program
- implements a subset of the full DES. It still provides substantial protection
- but it is not as great as would be achieved using full DES. I will send a
- version of this program with full DES to US and Canadian addresses for $10.

-
- This animation was created by a new freeware photorealistic rendering

-
- RTrace was written by Antonio Costa at INESC-Norte in Portugal. The

- (Reid Judd at Illuminati).
-
- RTrace supports these capabilities:
- point lights, directional lights, spot lights with fall-off, extended

- parallelipipeds, cylinders, cones, bicubic patches, polygons,
- polygonal patches, high quality 3D text, CSG operations,
- 4x4 matrix transformations, textures, depth of field, diffuse

-
- Procedural textures (with 4x4 matrix transformations) are also
- supported: checkerboard, color blotches, marble, bump map,

-
- Mac-RTrace uses parametric equations (using an algebraic equation

- Subject: [*] UPLOADING suntar1.3.2.sit.hqx
-
- Which file to get among suntar.sit, suntar.uu and suntar_from_msdos ?
-
- If you can download the .sit (or .sit.hqx) file to a Mac and extract
- it, get it.
- Otherwise, you have the "bootstrapping" problem of downloading your
- first downloading application and suntar.uu is the file for you:
- if you may download it to a UNIX machine with a 3.5" floppy disk
- drive, by following the instructions and using universally available
- UNIX tools you may use that UNIX disk drive to create a Macintosh
- disk containing suntar, a Mac <-> UNIX communication program, which
- has the same hardware requirements needed to create that disk and
- is much more reliable and easy to use than this first transfer.
- By using suntar, to transfer data between a UNIX machine and a Mac
- becomes easy, even in conditions which exclude the most common
- solutions, modems and LANs. And a freeware program requiring as
- extra hardware only a floppy disk is very cheap...
- Suntar and the method to rebuild a Mac disk under UNIX were tried
- with SPARCstations and IBM RISC/6000, but others machines should
- work as well.
- The file suntar_from_msdos allows you to decode the suntar.uu file
- on an MS-DOS machine, creating the Mac disk containing suntar on a
- PC with a 3.5" disk drive. Probably an MS-DOS user will not need a
- tar application for the Mac, but since Apple File Exchange can't be
- used to transfer a Mac application without a MacBinary or BinHex
- converter, Mac owners who may access public domain archives through
- an MS-DOS machine may have the same "bootstrapping" problem of UNIX
- users and since suntar can convert MacBinary and BinHex files, using
- it may solve their problem until they download something which is
- more suited to the job.

- Subject: [*] UPLOADING suntar1.3.2.uu
-
- Get this if you have no way to download the .sit (or .sit.hqx)
- file: this file can be used on an UNIX machine by universally available
- UNIX tools to create a Macintosh disk containing a Mac <-> UNIX
- communication program. We have been reported some problems in the use
- of this file, but if you succeed to perform the unreliable operation
- only once, you'll get a reliable communication path from the Macintosh
- (with a 1440k disk drive) and an UNIX machine with a 3.5" floppy disk
- drive: we've received success reports from users of many kinds of
- workstations including SPARCstations, IBM RISC/6000, NeXTstations and
- Sony News. (There is also a way to do that from MS-DOS, see later).
-
- This file contains suntar 1.3.2, a freeware program which running on the
- Macintosh can read and write floppy disks in the format used by tar,
- a backupper and archiver bundled with every copy of UNIX.
- Its hardware requirements are a Mac with a Superdrive and a UNIX
- workstation having a 720 or 1440 Kbytes, 3.5 inch, MFM floppy disk drive.
- For the skeptics, almost all 720 and 1440k drives are compatible with
- the IBM format, it's cheaper and simpler to use an already known
- technology, hence they are all reciprocally compatible.
-
- It's easy to download public domain software from all those ftp-able
- places accessible from UNIX computers in the Universities, but there
- is a problem: one gets UNIX files on UNIX machines, they must be
- downloaded to your Mac and converted to a Mac format: suntar solves the
- problem by performing this final download and the simplest (and most
- common) conversions. But if I need a downloading program to download
- anything, how can I download my first downloading program ? Suntar
- could be used to download suntar itself in the .sit format, and to
- download the StuffIt program needed to extract it, but what happens
- if you have just got your Mac and you have only the software bundled
- with it ? It looks like a recursive problem. Apple File Exchange can't
- help, since its only output format is a data fork-only file, while an
- application is a resource fork-only file (however, you may solve the
- problem if you get StuffIt from a friend and download mtools, a public
- domain UNIX package which reads and writes disks in the MS-DOS format:
- then you must copy the .sit.hqx (BinHex) file, or get a .sit or .sit.bin
- (MacBinary) file and have the (shareware) MacBinary translator for AFE
- (beware, many archives store only the upload translator), or pass it through
- a MacBinary converter such as BinHex 5.0 or suntar: not an easy task anyway,
- if you haven't an earlier version of suntar or a network or modem
- connection between UNIX and a Mac you should prefer to use this file).
-
- We've found another solution, which is lengthy and unusual but works:
- this file is NOT a .hqx file, it has a format of its own which allows
- you to perform the magic. You must just follow the instructions
- carefully.
-
- a) download this file to a UNIX machine (if you are reading here, you
- should have already done that)
- b) at the UNIX prompt, type
- uudecode name-of-this-file
- (you'll notice that a file "suntar.dump" was created by this
- command)
- c) get a 720k or 1440k formatted disk. You may format it on the UNIX
- workstation (by fdformat), on a IBM PS/2 or, on the Mac, under Apple
- File Exchange (the command just above Quit in the file menu).
- Initializing it under the Finder limits you to the 1440K format, and
- decreases your probability of success.
- d) discover the device name of your floppy disk drive: it's "/dev/rfd0"
- on a Sun 3, SPARCstation or IBM RISC/6000 (which autosense the density),
- on Sun 386i it's /dev/rfd0 or /dev/rfdl0 according to the density (1440
- or 720k), on other machines it might be /dev/rdsk, /dev/rfp, /dev/rflp,
- and other characters may be optionally appended meaning the currently
- used density. That initial 'r' is another attribute (raw) and may be
- suppressed. UNIX should tell you the right name when you type
- "man fdformat" or "man -k disk", otherwise you may ask to your system
- administrator.
- On the NeXTstation things are more complex, probably a beginner should
- not try that. On it, disk devices require root privileges, and if you
- simply
- insert a disk, the system will try to mount it. To use tar, you must launch
- it, wait for a dialog which asks for the disk, and now insert it. Under
- NeXT
- OS 2.0 and 2.1 the device name was /dev/rfd0h for the internal drive and
- /dev/rsd1h for an external SCSI drive: BEWARE that /dev/rsd0h is the hard
- disk, and since you must do that with root privileges a mistyped character
- may cause horrible things: you should try to read from the device (e.g. by
- "cat /dev/rfd0h") and be sure that's accessing the floppy disk, before
- trying to write. Under later versions the device is /dev/rfd0b (the digit
- may be 0 to 7 and is not a drive number, it's dynamically assigned to disks
- when they are mounted and any number should be good).
- e) Insert the disk in the drive in the UNIX workstation
- f) type
- tar cvf /dev/rfd0 suntar.dump
- (obviously, using the right device name)
- g) eject the disk (by typing "eject" or, on the NeXTstation,
- "disk -e -f /dev/rfd0b", or pressing the eject button) and take it
- to your Mac
- h) insert the disk in the floppy drive: you thought that it was a disk
- in UNIX format, but you'll discover it is a Macintosh disk too,
- containing a file "suntar1.3.2.sea" (yes, suntar.dump is a byte to
- byte copy of a valid Mac disk, including all system information, but
- excluding sector 0 which anyway is not essential: we could have
- included sector 0 so that you could use cat to put it on the disk,
- but you must get used to using tar)
- i) double click on suntar1.3.2.sea (maybe after copying it to your hard
- disk) and you'll be prompted for a destinaton folder, where the
- program puts an executable version of suntar and two files of
- documentation readable by TeachText (which was in one of your system
- disks)
- j) if something goes wrong, you may try with another Macintosh, another
- disk formatted in a different way, or a different version of the
- Finder. If things still go wrong, and you are sure that your Mac has
- a SuperDrive, check that the disk is really a tar archive containing
- suntar.dump, and that you have followed every step in the
- instructions: your unexperience could be the source of the problem,
- everybody may make errors when doing a thing the first time...
- k) remember that the disk used for the transfer is NOT a 100% Mac disk:
- sector 1598 and the disk size information are invalid, you
- could have some problems with it, and you will surely have if
- you continue to use it on the Mac, hence reformat it, or choose to
- use it as a UNIX disk.
- l) use suntar as you wish. Suggestion: start by downloading some
- compactors and file format converters, that will be useful also to get
- experience in to use of ftp, e.g. you'll learn quickly what happens
- when downloading a binary file in ASCII mode.
-
- For MS-DOS users, who can't use uudecode nor tar, the instructions are:
- a) get the file suntar_from_msdos (renaming it to uundump.hex) and this
- file (suntar.uu)
- b) at the DOS prompt, type "DEBUG < uundump.hex" (that creates a file
- uundump.com)
- c) now, type "uundump suntar.uu A:" (with a formatted, empty disk in
- 3.5" drive A; obviously B: is supported too) and confirm by typing Y
- and a carriage return
- d) continue from step g of the instructions for UNIX
- However, who must follow this way probably will not need a tar application,
- in suntar they will appreciate only the "Open file" command (which decodes
- both MacBinary and BinHex, overcoming the "data fork only" limitation of
- AFE).

- The University of Minnesota did a study more than a decade ago (one of

- This is a good thing for someone to write for Frontier Runtime. You
- could very easily have a Frontier script, working with the $25 shareware
- Runtime, pop-up a dialog asking for the wildcard, and then search
- the entire disk for matching files. Since you never quite know what
- might match your name, the script should just move all the files into
- a Junk Me folder on your desktop. You could then take a quick glance
- through to make sure "recipe.baklava" wasn't deleted along with
- "stupidWordFile.bak" (since they share the .bak string, although it
- would be possible to limit the strings to extensions, I suppose).
- Once you were sure, you could trash the Junk me folder...
-
- Then you could have the script install itself in your Finder's Scripts
- menu (using FinderMenu that works with Frontier and Frontier Runtime)
- so it is always at your fingertips.
-
- We'll have a review of Frontier and another of Runtime coming soon
- in TidBITS, and frankly, I think Runtime is more important. :-)

- Just an observation -> I have three partitions on my hard drive. When I do
- a desktop rebuild, and the "A" partition is done, it presents the dialog
- box asking if I want to rebuild "B," meanwhile there is still some hard
- disk activity going on. If I check "OK" to rebuild "B" before the hard disk
- activity is finished from rebuilding "A," it seems that the thermometer
- showing progress for rebuilding "B" will "overrun" it bounding box.
- However, if I wait until the hard disk activity is finished after rebuilding

- Word processors do a good job of managing larger works - reports, papers,
- theses. What most people need is an application or DA for handling small bits
- of information quickly and easily. Enter the aptly-named FlashWrite ][ DA, the
- shareware successer to Apple's own NotePad DA.
-
- Better than a word processor for small amounts of information:
- *launches faster, and launches with a keypress thanks to a control panel
- *doesn't require opening any files. uses pages instead
- *new pages and changes to old pages are automatically saved when you quit
- *only uses 20K, and can be used in System 6 without MultiFinder
-
- Advantages over NotePad DA:
- *unlimited number of resizable pages with up to 32,000 characters per
- page
- *can use any font or style, with point sizes from 9 to 24
- *pages can be printed, text files imported, and text exported with the
- creator code of your favorite word processor.
- *menu for switching between pages. pages are named
- *lightning-fast word count
- *word find and find again
-
- I use FlashWrite every time I turn on my Mac. I use it to keep track of
- books, movies, CDs, and software I'm interested in. One page stores the serial
- numbers for my electronics, one has ftp sitess and user names, and I use
- another
- to store interesting .sigs. For the person who wanted a monospaced text editor
- for online messaging, use FlashWrite with the font for a given page set to

- FlashWrite ][ 1.1 is shareware, $15, by Andrew Welch, author of ToDo! and

-
- Here's some information for those of you curious about upgrading your IIsi
- to run at 25MHz.
-
- The procedure is fairly simple and costs only about $4 in parts. The result
- can be a 25% increase in speed--making your IIsi as fast as a IIci. The speed
- gain in video processing is even greater, ranging from 33% to 50% in 8-bit
- mode.
-
- HOWEVER, the upgrade is NOT GUARANTEED TO WORK! About 20 people have reported
- doing the upgrade, and it FAILED for about 5 of them. It failed for me.
- Some people reported that adding a heat sink to the CPU made it work, but
- even that didn't help me. Problems seem to be more likely to occur if you
- have a NuBus adapter card; in my own case the upgrade works perfectly until
- I put my NuBus adapter in and then I'm lucky to get a successful boot. Others
- have reported having no problems at all with a NuBus adapter.
-
- The best thing to do is to solder a socket into the motherboard where the
- 40MHz oscillator goes. Then you can drop in a 50MHz oscillator, see if it
- works, and put your 40MHz oscillator back in if you have problems. Better
- yet, if you can get your hands on crystals with intermediate frequencies you
- can keep trying until you find the fastest that works.
-
- If anyone wants detailed instructions on the upgrade or more information on
- my experience with it, e-mail me.

-
- > Does anyone know of an imagewriter II driver for Windows 3.1 or even
- > just DOS.
-
- The first thing you need is a null modem cable. A Mac to Modem cable with
- a DB25 female-female null modem adapter will work. You may also need a
- 9-25 pin adapter depending on your PC serial port. I will assume you are
- using serial port one, but if you are using serial port two, substitute
- COM1 with COM2 in the following.
-
- Dip switches on the ImageWriter may need changing. It's been a long time
- since I've done this, so I don't remember for sure.
-
- For WordPerfect 5.1 DOS, all you need to do is select the ImageWriter
- driver (it comes with 5.1 unless you have a really early release of 5.1)
- and the setup should be COM1:, 9600 baud, no parity, one stop bit.
-
- For other DOS programs, you will probably need to use the follwoing DOS
- mode commands (in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file):
-
- MODE COM1:9600,N,8,1,P
- MODE LPT1:=COM1: (only if you want LPT1 redirected to COM1)
-
- There is an ImageWriter driver for Word 5.0 and 5.5 for DOS but I don't
- think it comes with the package. It has been posted to various on-line
- archives, so you should be able to find it.
-
- I have not seen an ImageWriter driver for any other DOS software, but you
- can usually get away with setting the application for a "standard",
- "dumb", or "undefined" printer and get plain text output. If the
- application lets you define your own driver or enter control codes for
- bold, underline, etc. you will need to refer to your ImageWriter manual
- for these codes.
-
- For Windows, it is pretty much hopeless unless you can find an ImageWriter
- driver for Windows that supports the ImageWriter graphics mode. I have not
- seen one, but maybe somebody out there has written one. I once tried the
- DOS Word driver with Windows 3.0 and the Windows PRD Driver. It worked a
- little bit but was very flakey (printed partial jobs a lot). I don't even
- think this is an option in Windows 3.1. Running a printer in non-graphic
- mode with Windows 3.1 is next to useless (just about impossible to get
- anything near WYSIWIG even if you use the Courier font).

- Subject: PB100 and SE/30 using different amounts of System RAM
-
- I recently put System 7.1 on both my SE/30 and my Powerbook 100. They are
- running virtually the same INITs, and have the same "Memory" settings (disk
- cache at 192k).
-
- When doing a restart with all extensions off, I get the following:
- PB100 - - - 940k System Software
- SE/30 - - - 1441k System Software
-
- And when I let all the INITs load, I get this:
- PB100 - - - 1680k System Software
- SE/30 - - - 2311k System Software
-
- Why is my SE/30 using so much more RAM? A call to Apple's 1-800 number
- proved sorta fruitless, I was told to keep condensing all my fonts into
- fewer suitcases. Good idea, I suppose, but even when I completely remove
- the Fonts folder from my boot folder and restart my SE/30 is using about
- 250k more than my fully loaded PB100.
-
- Is this all due to the extra amount of code needed to support the SE/30?
- Any help or illumination would be appreciated!

-
- There has been some comments about rebuilding the desktop. I have a small hint
- that I have used about 5 times with zero problems (I make no promises to your
- success or failure rate). I use System 7 and this exact method won't work on
- earlier versions since you can't quit the Finder.
-
- When I have only one application that has lost its icon, I don't want to wait
- for the (can be) lengthy desktop rebuilding process of a large hard drive. I
- just move the file to a floppy and delete the old copy (backup, backup). Keep
- the floppy with your file in the Mac. Then quit Finder (and other apps of
- course) with CMD-OPT-ESC and hold CMD-OPT to rebuild the desktop (this is the
- same as others have said).
-
- When it prompts to rebuild the desktop on your booting hard drive, say NO. It
- should then prompt you to rebuild the other connected drives including your
- floppy. Say yes to rebuilding the desktop on your floppy. You should now have
- the correct icon again. All that is left is to copy the file back to the
- desired hard drive.
-
- This can be a time saver depending on your file size and your hard drive
- size.
- My only claim is that it has worked for me and saved me some time. And of
- course time is money and money can be spent on Mac stuff and the more Mac
- stuff
- you have ...

- You can keep the keyboard an monitor and buy a IIci for just over $2K
- or a Quadra 700 for around $3,500 (educational prices). The IIci in
- one-bit mode (or in color if you scrap the II and put the video card in
- the IIci) will be on the order of four times as quick as the II. A
- Quadra on the other hand, is about 8 times as fast. If $3,500 breaks

- a Quadra 700 for around $2,500.

-
- I need a SIMPLE, FREEWARE utility for a Mac lab for converting TEXT files
- among Mac, PC, and Unix format. I've considered Apple File Exchange, but
- it is too complicated for the average lab user. It also does some other
- things that I don't want the users doing.
-
- What's needed is an application that just provides an "Open" or "Convert"
- menu and then presents the following options:
-
- Convert TEXT file to:
-
- - Mac format (CR)
- PC format (CRLF)
- Unix format (LF)
-
- By default, "Mac format" would be checked. Once the correct format is
- chosen, the user would click OK and get a standard file dialog which
- should have a "Convert" rather than "Open" button and just show files of
- type TEXT.
-
- It would also be handy if it supported drag and drop of multiple files for
- System 7 users.
-
- Anybody seen such a program or care to whip one up?

- Subject: Trouble with Timbuktu Remote Wake up
-
- Howdy Folks!
-
- Does anyone have any experience with Timbuktu Remote Wake Up? I have a
- Quadra 700 connected to an Ericsson MD110 digital phone system via a
- TAU-2620 unit. Timbuktu remote works quite well, but if I have my Quadra
- turned off and then call in to wake it up remotely, it will not shut down. The
- only way I can get the machine to shutdown is to pull off the Remote Wake
- Up cable. As long as the cable is attached it continues to restart instead of
- shutdown (even if the TAU box is turned off!!!). In an attempt to trouble
- shoot this problem I replaced the cable, the Autoshut Down cdev and the
- TAU box. I also switched ADB ports to eliminate the possibility of a bad
- ADB. The problem persists. Has anyone experienced a similar problem or
- have any suggestions on what to try next?
-
- I spoke to the people at Timbuktu and they suggested that the TAU may have
- a voltage leak, but they could not tell me what the voltage should be to start
- the computer. I doubt this is the problem anyway, since changing the TAU
- box should have eliminated anything faulty with the first TAU.
-
- Another interesting observation is that sometimes, even with the TAU box
- turned off, just disconnecting the remote cable at the TAU box sends a false
- ring signal to the computer causing it to start up.
-
- Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! I'd be happy to
- summarize for the net if there is interest.

- Subject: White Knight vt100 emulation problem?
-
- I use my Mac and White Knight 11.12 to dial up to my school's unix
- boxen and (mostly) run emacs. White Knight claims to emulate vt100
- and vt102. I have a Mac 12" monitor which is kind of small and I'd
- like to cram as many lines onto it as possible so I'm trying to get
- unix, emacs and White Knight to cooperate in giving me 40 lines
- instead of the usual 24. I've been told by the system administrators
- that it should work if I use vt102 emulation and do "stty rows 40" and
- if it doesn't then it's a bug in White Knight. Well it doesn't work.
- While some programs recognize that I have 40 lines (e.g. man) emacs
- still insists on using 24 lines. Actually emacs does seem to believe
- that I'm using 40 lines but it tries to display all 40 lines in the
- bottom 24 lines of the screen.
-
- Anyone else have this problem, or know how I might fix it?
