- Sorry that you took this the wrong way, Brian. What I said was "any idiot can
- write code which drives the ATI card AS A VGA CARD". (emphasis on the last 4
- words). The key is VGA. This entails using the arcane memory manipulation
- features and BIOS interface of the original VGA, and such techniques were mastered
- many years ago for the EGA of the mid 80's. Such a card would cost perhaps $50
- or less with today's PC technology. To pay $600 for a VGA card is absurd--people
- will want to use the cutting edge capabilities that they pay $600 for, meaning the
- non-VGA capabilities of this card such as so-called "super VGA" modes (which has
- nothing to do with the original 640x480 VGA architecture), pipelined memory access,
- hardware bitblt, area fill, and so forth. It is THESE features that allow ATI to
- offer a video card at a $900 list price and $550 to $600 street price. And that's
- why it's then so infuriating that ATI wants to make a federal case out of giving
- people the information they require to use the features that make this card
- cost $600.
-
- Again, I had no intention of offending you or anyone else.
