- In general, I find that the Amiga has a lot of potential, but that it
- isn't a polished machine. For example, the OS is way better than a Mac,
- yet it still isn't fully up to basic UNIX functionality (see the
- discussion about debugging on .programmer, etc.). Also, it seems like the
- user interface hasn't received enough attention (my favorite is how in 1.3
- and 2.0 (well, early versions at least - I haven't used any new new
- versions) a window can't be off the screen.).
-
- If you were to present an Amiga and a Mac to some potential buyer,
- he/she/it is likely to say, "Gee. The Amiga has some interesting
- programs, but it looks like a computer (in the PC / blinking lights in
- movies sense) - the interface isn't consistent and so is pretty confusing.
- The Mac is consistent. I like that. Who cares about the OS not really
- multitasking?"
-
- My point isn't that Commodore has done the wrong thing all along, only
- that I think they should move in new directions now that they have kul
- stuff in place. Make the user interface better (ie: get a real toolkit so
- that everyone can have a standard interface, rather than having a
- different interface for every program!) & make the OS complete: polish the
- machine until it positively gleams.
-
- Why hasn't Commodore added real memory protection to the Amiga? Also, why
- haven't they added virtual memory (or at least marketed an "extension" or
- whatever to do it)? I know of at least one company selling a virtual
- memory program - perhaps Commodore could liscence it?
-
- Q: What is the deal with the AGA stuff? Is this chipset a "low end" AGA,
- ie: are there going to be better chipsets on the way RSN? To be honest, I
- am not all that impressed with the new chipset - you can have full 32 bit
- color on a Mac pretty easily. The Amiga has a problem in that the
- functionality is hardwired in. I wish the chipsets were designed in such a
- way as to work with any bit depth up to full 32 (well, 24 really I guess)
- bit color.
-
- Q: Can anyone make some comments on graphics boards for the Amiga? There
- are some nice systems, from what I can get out of the advertisements, but
- no really interesting specs. For example, on a Mac you can have multiple
- monitors no problem. You can't do this easily on an Amiga as far as I know
- - can you maybe buy a kul video card and have it drive one (or more)
- monitors while your standard chipset in your Amiga drive another?
-
- Sincerely,
- -Jon.
