- Commodore International Ltd. Had Loss of $18.8 Million for Fiscal
- First Quarter
-
- West Chester, Pa. - Commodore International Ltd. reported an
- $18.8 million loss for the quarter ended Spet. 30, saying it was
- hurt by softness in its main European markets.
-
- The computer maker said the first quarter of fiscal 1993 was hit
- particularly hard by weak markets in Germany, the biggest market
- for its consumer-oriented computers. [Shame on you Germans!]
-
- For the quarter, Commodore said its loss was equal to 57 cents a
- share, compared with a profit of $5.3 million, or 16 cents a
- share, the year earlier. Revenue dropped more than 22% to
- $158.6 million from 204.1 million.
-
- "I think we can look for a gradual improvement as we go
- foreward," said Ronald Opel, an analyst with Fechtor, Detwiler &
- Co. in Boston. He added that while the current period will be
- tough, Commodore's recovery should start whenever European
- economies begin to bounce back in 1993.
-
- Steve Eskenazi of Alex. Brown & Sons Inc. said new products,
- including new models in the company's Amiga line, also will play
- a crucial role. But he said it"s too early to tell whether a
- strong comeback is in the cards.
-
- "There are a number of questions before we determine whether
- Commodore returns to profitability in the long term," Mr.
- Eskenazi said.
-
- This may not sound very good to some of you, but Commodore was very
- successful in achieving it's Principal corporate goal. IRVING PAID NO
