-
- Sure, anything is possible with a little hacking. The question is,
- are you up to it?
-
- Here are some things to consider if you want to do this:
-
- 1> IDE ribbon cable
-
- As has been discussed here already, the 2.5" drive has a different
- cable than a 3.5" drive. If your adventurous, you can make a cable
- to convert to the 3.5" pinout and connector.
-
- 2> Mounting
-
- The hard disk may require new holes drilled into the case for attaching
- the mounting screws. There seems to be about six different "standards"
- used so far. Also, make sure your spiffy new IDE drive is the correct
- height to fit in the drive bay. Rumor has it the floppy is only 1"
- tall.
-
- 3> Power
-
- Figure out where to get +12 volts from, in sufficent quantity to
- be able to spin up your 3.5" drive. It may require 1 Amp or more.
- The 2.5" drives only use +5v.
- Hook up this +12V and the System +5V to a power connector (user
- supplied) that will fit the 3.5" hard disk.
-
- 4> Floppy drive select 0
-
- Find the drive select 0 trace running to the internal floppy port,
- cut it. Find the drive select 1,2 and 3 running to the external floppy
- port, cut them all. Now, wire 0 to external 1, 1 to external 2, 2 to
- external 3. Now at least you can have external DF0: DF1: and DF2
- instead of external DF1: DF2: and DF3:.
-
- 5> External floppy enclosure and cable.
-
- Find a suitable enclosure for your floppy. Dont forget the external
- flip flop and NAND gate required for external drives.
-
- There, that should about cover it.
-
- Simple, no?
