- Well, the question was a little ambiguous. Does "with parnet" mean "with
- ParNet alone" or "with ParNet and some compatible software for the 386"?
- You can't connect an Amiga to a 386 with ParNet alone. Of course you can
- connect any two computers with networking software (and hardware) which they
- both understand. Fer F.de Jong (fer@home.cern.ch) wrote me that "there is
- a PARNET version for SM-DOS running machines." (Ask him why he wrote
- "SM-DOS" instead of "MS-DOS".) He said he believed the program was
- commercial but didn't offer any further information about it.
-
- Connecting two Amigas with ParNet is neat. Each machine gets a "Network"
- disk icon and with a little fiddling around the disks on the remote machine
- appear as drawer icons in "Network". You can do anything to the files on
- the remote machine that you can do to those on the local machine, using
- either the Workbench or CLI.
-
- The limitations of MS-DOS would make it hard to provide full ParNet
- functionality, I think. How would you handle ".info" files? How would you
- deal with long filenames? What would you do with executable files?
-
- If you were willing to accept the filename limitations of MS-DOS and just
- wanted to share files ParNet and a compatible handler on the MS-DOS side
- could work.
