  12. of the hardware basis for LocalTalk, thus:

  19. for me to be confident that "forgetting it" is exactly the right answer.
  20. The controller for the serial port is a National 16550.  From what I can
  21. glean, this is a reasonably fast "pure serial" chip, but won't have a
  22. prayer of handling LocalTalk sensibly.  It has a 16 byte (yes, that's
  23. right, a massive 128 bits :-) buffer, and the native driver supports
  24. hardware flow control (RTS/CTS), so it sounds as if I'd be able to run
  25. Kermit/XMODEM/whatever at 230.4kbaud, but not real LocalTalk.  Or, indeed,
  26. running SLIP on both ends at this speed.

  32. Checked out --- looks obscenely perfect!  Like, all a chap need do is
  33. bring "async" up on the HP box, and the Async AppleTalk adev on the real
  34. computer :-), with CAP running on the HP box too?  (Presumably ARNS and
  35. CAP communicate via the local 127.0.0.1 IP address...)  Sounds great: I'll
  36. let you know how I get on.
