- | Running VMS 5.4-3 and using vi for editor. Problem:
- |
- | with no other jobs running, can be typing along and all of a sudden,
- | everything come to a halt. No chars on screen. Wait 5 secs and all
- | starts up again and chars on screen are printed catching up with those
- | typed while on hold. This is very strange and getting quite annoying.
- |
- | It is like the system is going off to do some job that takes everything
- | I have for about 5 secs, then comes back to me.
- |
- | Nothing I have found sets this off. It will occur when typing a line
- | and I can type several line, or sometimes several words and wham.
- |
- | Watching the system on a second port with MON CLU while in vi on first
- | port show only about 10% CPU, 15% mem, 1% disk, and 0 Locks. And not
- | much changes even when the problem hits on the other port.
- |
- | The 'hold time' seems to be constant, always about 5 secs, then it comes
- | back.

- | Again, running VMS5.4-3 on 16 meg ram, MVII.

- Is your terminal hardwired to the VAX, or does it come thru the
- network? If the latter, then an explanation perfectly consistent
- with observed phenomenon would be that the network has
- dropped a packet.
