- Greets and Salutes,
-
- I'm a newcomer to the OS/2 fold, having installed OS/2 2.0 GA on
- Monday (thanks for the the 5.25" bootstrap install disks, IBM!). For
- the most part, everything is peachy-keen. I am very impressed by just
- about everything, but I do have a few questions... I'm posting these
- to the misc group (only post to ONE newsgroup, right?) even though
- some of these questions may be more appropriate to the apps group.
-
- I have read the FAQ, fairly carefully, but I may have missed some
- things... please forgive if I re-ask a FAQ. I've also scanned the
- complete index at hobbes, but again may have missed an entry.
-
- 1. Is there a utility that will save my WPS configuration on demand?
- Having to "shutdown" each time is a pain, especially since BOOT.COM
- does not properly save my objects' positions when I want to switch
- to a DOS boot (hey, gotta play Wiz7 now and then :^).
-
- 2. I _really_ want GNU Emacs, but I am not quite ready to go to HPFS
- yet. So, until either (a) someone does an OS/2+FAT version of Gnu
- Emacs or (b) I go to HPFS, I am using Micro Emacs. It's just
- different enough from the GNU version to drive me nuts (well,
- nuttier)... But what I really want to know is: is there a TeX mode
- written for MicroEmacs and if so, where is it?
-
- 3. Someone mentioned an "rm" written for OS/2... I couldn't find it on
- hobbes. Could someone point me in the right direction? And, while
- we're at it, how about an "mv" that runs under OS/2? (Best of all
- would be a zsh for OS/2 complete with all the file utils, but I
- won't hold my breath. :^)
-
- 4. While I'm on the subject of UN*X utils, how do I change the display
- colors for less? Without re-compiling, that is. The current black-
- on-orange is downright painful.
-
- 5. TE/2 insists that it is already online when I go to the dial
- directory. It has also stopped dialing, even though it claims to
- be (dialing, that is). It worked on Wednesday, though! Forcing a
- "hang-up" doesn't work ("TE/2 is on line! Are you sure you want to
- hang up?"). I'm using the 1.02 commpak.dll...
-
- 6. While TE/2 is not working, I am using ProComm+ (which I like
- plenty). But the patch file (on hobbes) does not come with the
- "patcher" executable (not to mention that the install.exe in the
- archive was the wrong size) and the mouse thing is a big hinderance.
- Makes using the rest of the desktop sort of like a game called
- "Keep the Pointer Away From the ProComm Window." Any suggestions?
-
- 7. DeskPic really messes up (my desktop went completely blank)... the
- only way to recover was to use Ctrl-Esc and close DeskPic from the
- menu. Yowza was even worse. Anyone know of a working screen saver?
- I'd be willing to pay for After Dark OS/2 at this point.
-
- Responses by newsgroup or e-mail are fine. If I manage to stay
- organized, I will post a summary of any e-mail responses I get...
-
- Thanks for listening,
-
- Nick
-
- p.s. This is on a 386DX-33 with 8M RAM. I have an 80M C: drive (about
- 15M free) and a 98M D: drive (about 45M free), both FAT.
