- Just finished installing the CSD on my computer. Thought I'd give a short
- report:
-
- Hardware: 486/33 w/8M RAM, 240M HD (Bootmanager, FAT, and HPFS Paritions)
- Tseng4000 Local Bus card w/1M RAM (capable of 32K colors).
-
- Installation: The installation went extremely smooth (after I figured
- out what to do). Everything was on the desktop where I
- left it.
-
- Graphics: The graphics are somewhat slower under the generic Tseng4K drivers
- supplied with OS/2 CSD than Windows 3.1 drivers supplied w/my
- generic card. Also, the OS/2 drivers don't support 32K colors,
- like I have in Windows. :-( But that is to be expected with
- generic drivers. I'm just really pleased to be in 800x600x256
- mode in OS/2. However, the OS/2 Bitmaps I store to be placed
- in the background are not the correct color. PaintShop Pro
- swears they are only 150-200 colors dependant on which bitmap.
- Any suggestions to fix that would be appreciated.
-
- DOS Programs: The only problem I have experienced that I hate so far
- is that some programs that I used to be able to start-up
- and run in a Window, now require full screen mode (Harvard
- Graphics 2.3 for example). Any solution would be appreciated.
- Other than that, all I have to say is it is fast. Using
- default Fractint set-up, it only requires about .13 seconds
- more to generate a Mandelbrot set at 1024x768x256 than it does
- in native DOS.
-
- Windows Programs: Finally, seamless SVGA 800x600x256! Only one minor
- nuisance. When running a Win program, the background
- of the Desktop changes color. Also, some weird pallete
- changes when displaying graphics that take the entire
- pallette. Any suggestions? Other than that, I'm
- extremely pleased. (OS/2 open menu's faster in AmiPro
- 2.0 than Win 3.1 does :-) )
-
- OS/2 Programs: At 256 colors, my Ray Traced images are viewable, unlike only
- 16 colors. No complaints.
-
- All in all, I'm just really glad that I can now display 800x600x256.
- Minor nuisances. I love it.
