  12. I have linux 0.09.3 installed on a 33 Mhz 386 system with an et4000 based
  13. vga card, and a 50 meg root and ~10 meg swap partition.  I have had XFree86
  14. version 1.1 installed and working for some time now.

  16. Recentley I have encountered an odd problem.  After I do a shutdown or reboot,
  17. when I log and start X I get the normal:

  19. speedup mode selected
  20. flags=0x3f
  21.  
  22. Then the X screen twinges and dies with an error:

  24. xterm can't loaf library XawVen.so.2.1
  25. exec format error
  26.  
  27. and back to the bash prompt.

  29. Now, if I go to xbin2.1.tar.Z and put a fresh copy of /lib/XawVen.so.2.1
  30. in place all is well, util after I shutdown or reboot.

  32. I have tried making XawVen.so.2.1 read/executable only to everybody, including
  33. it's owner.  Then when I start X it comes up with it's grey screen and hangs
  34. dead in the water.

  36. Some additional facts that may be helpful..
  37.  
  38. 1) Things where working fine until I played with shutdown and reboot, making
  39.    them suid root so normal users could shutdown the system.  This box is
  40.    mostley used for DOS, but a few folks like playing with unix.  I need a
  41.    way non root's can shut the sytem down without me being around.  After
  42.    the problems started I brought fresh copies of shutdown and reboot in
  43.    from diskettes and that did not solve the problem.

  45. 2) When the system is shut down, it just says can't unmount and a blank.
  46.    At home my root disk name is in there.  At work it is /dev/hda2 but
  47.    it does not show up.  I have updated the kernel and rebuilt it a few
  48.    times and this does not go away.

  50. So, do any of you have ideas on 1) How to fix X or what is killing
  51. XawVen.so.2.1, and 2) any ideas for a nice safe way to allow normal users to
  52. shut the system down?
