- I have linux 0.09.3 installed on a 33 Mhz 386 system with an et4000 based
- vga card, and a 50 meg root and ~10 meg swap partition. I have had XFree86
- version 1.1 installed and working for some time now.
-
- Recentley I have encountered an odd problem. After I do a shutdown or reboot,
- when I log and start X I get the normal:
-
- speedup mode selected
- flags=0x3f
-
- Then the X screen twinges and dies with an error:
-
- xterm can't loaf library XawVen.so.2.1
- exec format error
-
- and back to the bash prompt.
-
- Now, if I go to xbin2.1.tar.Z and put a fresh copy of /lib/XawVen.so.2.1
- in place all is well, util after I shutdown or reboot.
-
- I have tried making XawVen.so.2.1 read/executable only to everybody, including
- it's owner. Then when I start X it comes up with it's grey screen and hangs
- dead in the water.
-
- Some additional facts that may be helpful..
-
- 1) Things where working fine until I played with shutdown and reboot, making
- them suid root so normal users could shutdown the system. This box is
- mostley used for DOS, but a few folks like playing with unix. I need a
- way non root's can shut the sytem down without me being around. After
- the problems started I brought fresh copies of shutdown and reboot in
- from diskettes and that did not solve the problem.
-
- 2) When the system is shut down, it just says can't unmount and a blank.
- At home my root disk name is in there. At work it is /dev/hda2 but
- it does not show up. I have updated the kernel and rebuilt it a few
- times and this does not go away.
-
- So, do any of you have ideas on 1) How to fix X or what is killing
- XawVen.so.2.1, and 2) any ideas for a nice safe way to allow normal users to
- shut the system down?
