  12. I'm sending this out to the newsgroup as well, to snag anyone who's 
  13. interested and not already on the mailing-list.

  15. The following is a summary of the status of the Documentation work being
  16. done on the DOC channel of the linux-activists@niksula.hut.fi mailing list.
  17. See the FAQ for instructions on how to join the list. :)

  19. The Linux Documentation Project is currently underway. We are working in
  20. concert to produce the "standard"/"official" set of Linux documentation
  21. as per Lars Wirzenius' outline for the project, discussed on the DOC
  22. channel of linux-activists. 
  23.  
  24. The documentation will basically consist of a set of "Books" or individual
  25. documents, each covering a different topic. The main documents in the series
  26. that this point are the Installation and Setup Guide, the User's Manual,
  27. and the System Administrator's Guide. Other documents, such as the Kernel
  28. Hacker's Guide and a yet-to-be-written Programmer's Guide, will also be
  29. incorporated into the project.

  31. The DOC channel of linux-activists serves as the discussion group for this
  32. project. We will all work together to write, edit, and review the documentation
  33. associated with this project. Moreover, Lars Wirzenius 
  34. (wirzenius@cc.helsinki.fi)has been "appointed" as the main "coordinator" of 
  35. this project, and will help to mae sure that the individual efforts are in 
  36. synch and that everyone's happy.

  38. In addition, each individual document in the series has its own coordinator.
  39. The coordinator for the User's Guide is currently Larry Greenfield 
  40. (greenfie@guass.rutgers.edu) and the coordinator for the Installation and
  41. Getting Started Guide is myself (mdw@tc.cornell.edu). Other documents have
  42. their own respective coordinators as well, but they will all be released 
  43. through one effort, with Lars overseeing. This organization is in an effort
  44. to bring together and coordinate a standard, reliable, and up-to-date set of
  45. Linux documentation.

  47. The documentation I'm referring to here aren't man pages and other on-line
  48. docs; that's a different ballgame altogether. However, we're hoping that the
  49. docs produced through the Doc Project will be converted to online format
  50. (the standard format will be LaTeX, which filters are being written for to
  51. convert to other formats if needed).

  53. Basically, anyone who wants to help write or work with this project in
  54. any way is welcome to join the DOC channel of linux-activists. If you'd
  55. like to contribute to a particular document, mail that document's coordinator.
  56. We're always looking for more help, so don't be shy. :) It's a very open
  57. project.

  59. Lars should be sending out a summary copy of his Doc Project Outline, along 
  60. with the coordinators for the various sections, sometime soon (right, Lasu? :)).
