I ran into the same problem. Looking into the other Xconfig files, you'll
notice that some of them don't have the Speedo or the Type1 dirs in the
font path. So I removed these two from my Xconfig, leaving only the
75dpi and the misc dirs in the font path. Then X worked fine.
I still haven't been able to get X to use the Type1, Speedo or Bitstream
Type1 fonts yet, though.
Also, make sure that the fonts are compressed and that there is a good
font directory in that dir (i.e. use mkfontdir)...
