- CERTIFICATION AND YOU
- Jan B. Wilson, CDP

- Jan has been an active member of the Institute for Certification of Computer
- Professionals for over 5 years. She will present an overview of the
- Institute, the examinations it offers, the certification designations
- professionals can earn, and the history bringing us to where we are today.

- Jan will explain the structure of the ICCP examinations and the examinations'
- life cycle. Included in the presentation is a discussion of some of the
- issues relating to the definition of a profession and professionalism as well
- as the requirements of the ICCP for maintaining a professional certification
- designation.

- What does certification mean, especially when contrasted to licensing? Along
- the way, Jan will tell you what certification means to her and what it may
- mean to you. And together, we can speculate on the future.

- Jan Wilson has been actively involved with certification of computer
- professionals for over a decade, starting with the 1981 formation of a joint
- committee for certification representing the Syracuse area chapters of the
- computing societies ACM, ASM and DPMA.

- Jan has worked on the international level with ICCP, the organization which
- offers the CDP, CCP and CSP professional designations. Jan served on the CDP
- Council from 1987 to 1989, when she became one of ACM's two representatives
- to the ICCP Board of Directors.

- Jan is currently the Manager of Systems Programming for the IBM VM system in
- the Client Services Department of Computing Services at Syracuse University.
- In the past she also has had responsibility for VMS, Unix, and MVS systems,
- was an applications programmer for the University's library system, and even
- worked as an applications programmer in the insurance industry before moving
- to Syracuse.

- Jan held her first ACM Chapter office in the 1970s, was elected to the
- Chapters Committee in 1980, directed the Chapter Leadership Workshop Program
- from 83 through 85, served two terms as Chapters Board Chairman from 85 to
- 89, was the Chapters Liaison to the SIG Board from 89 to 91, and has just
- been re-elected to the ACM Council for a second four-year term as Member-at-
- Large.
