  22. Jan has been an active member of the Institute for Certification of Computer
  23. Professionals for over 5 years. She will present an overview of the
  24. Institute, the examinations it offers, the certification designations
  25. professionals can earn, and the history bringing us to where we are today.
  26.  
  27. Jan will explain the structure of the ICCP examinations and the examinations'
  28. life cycle.  Included in the presentation is a discussion of some of the
  29. issues relating to the definition of a profession and professionalism as well
  30. as the requirements of the ICCP for maintaining a professional certification
  31. designation.
  32.  
  33. What does certification mean, especially when contrasted to licensing?  Along
  34. the way, Jan will tell you what certification means to her and what it may
  35. mean to you.  And together, we can speculate on the future.
  36.  
  37. Jan Wilson has been actively involved with certification of computer
  38. professionals for over a decade, starting with the 1981 formation of a joint
  39. committee for certification representing the Syracuse area chapters of the
  40. computing societies ACM, ASM and DPMA.
  41.  
  42. Jan has worked on the international level with ICCP, the organization which
  43. offers the CDP, CCP and CSP professional designations. Jan served on the CDP
  44. Council from 1987 to 1989, when she became one of ACM's two representatives
  45. to the ICCP Board of Directors.
  46.  
  47. Jan is currently the Manager of Systems Programming for the IBM VM system in
  48. the Client Services Department of Computing Services at Syracuse University. 
  49. In the past she also has had responsibility for VMS, Unix, and MVS systems,
  50. was an applications programmer for the University's library system, and even
  51. worked as an applications programmer in the insurance industry before moving
  52. to Syracuse.

  54. Jan held her first ACM Chapter office in the 1970s, was elected to the
  55. Chapters Committee in 1980, directed the Chapter Leadership Workshop Program
  56. from 83 through 85, served two terms as Chapters Board Chairman from 85 to
  57. 89, was the Chapters Liaison to the SIG Board from 89 to 91, and has just
  58. been re-elected to the ACM Council for a second four-year term as Member-at-
  59. Large.
