- Press releases (yeah, propaganda) have their place. The problem is when
- they spill over to unsuspecting newsgroups who really don't to hear it.
-
- It's appropriate to post press releases in newsgroups with a charter
- that indicates that those kind of announcements are acceptable, if not
- encouraged. Everything has its place. I would expect to see product
- announcements for the Amiga in places like comp.sys.amiga.advocacy or
- posts from Sun about Solaris 2.2 in comp.unix.solaris, but they would be
- out of place in comp.unix.wizards.
-
- It seems to me that "commercialization" is ok if the reader is a willing
- recipient that actually benefits from the "advertisements". For example,
- in misc.forsale, the poster hopes to sell and the reader hopes to buy.
- In misc.jobs.offered, the poster needs an employee and the reader needs
- a job. Everybody can get what they want. It's interesting to note that in
- these groups, discussion is forbidden (well, heavily flamed...) because
- it doesn't fit the charter of those newsgroups.
-
- I think the propaganda spilling into inappropriate forums is really the
- "commercialization of the net" being frowned upon. To me, that seems
- worthy of a frown. Of course, a more appropriate forum for this type
- of discussion is probably alt.culture.usenet... :)
-
- As for the other points of present "commercialization", none of them sound
- like a problem to me as long as everybody involved chips in their share
- to cover the costs of running the net. Just my $0.02 ...
