  16. are definitely a good stuff, but seeing how they are more
  17. and more used it does not reflect anymore the reality.

  19. First point: should costs reflect reall costs, delays or a combination of
  20. both of those parameters ?

  22. A cheap way may take several days whereas a not much more expensive one
  23. takes a few hours. I recently had the case with a site in the usa.tx maps
  24. who had a pathalias route cheap and efficient.

  28. ... with the recent set of maps posted for Texas, many links have
  29. changed, and in fact new ones have been added. From a two-hops
  30. away from the Internet I switched to another two hops away via
  31. site ks.uucp (at IBM Austin). Too bad, this site is misconfigured and
  32. all mail get bounced. I declared the site as dead and restarted the
  33. pathalias. News entry point: another IP site in Texas and 3 or
  34. 4 hops to go to my correspondant.  Another link dead, and that
  35. still for two or three more turns gave my unefficient routes
  36. with low cost...

  38. The problem can come from two points: not everyone declares its
  39. local calls with the same price. Nor does this really take into
  40. mind the delays in propagation and occupation of the different sites,
  41. etc...

  43. The used units do not seem anymore representative to me of the reality of
  44. the traffic and offten generate unadequate routes, or even impossible
  45. ones because lots of sites indicate links they don't handle anymore
  46. since years sometimes.  And of course mailing to those sites is useless
  47. because they are badly or even not administrated.  All of that is causing
  48. overwork to administrators wishing to provide a usable UUCP service
  49. to their users.

  51. I'm also conscient that changing the current cost scheme would
  52. be nearly impossible.
