  14. to produce a mass-market collaboration system.  It is not intended

  19. Methods of improving communication and decision making between people are in
  20. increasing demand.  With the growing power of desktop workstations and the
  21. advent of widespread high bandwidth data networks, new methods encompassing
  22. digital data, graphics, image and even realtime digital video in addition to
  23. voice have become practical.  Allowing several users to communicate and col-
  24. laborate on a single piece of work, although in separate locations, is called
  25. Computer Supported Collaborative Working (CSCW).

  27. IBM Person to Person/2 Version 1.0 provides CSCW for multiple users connected
  28. by local or remotely bridged LAN or ASYNC communication links and enables the
  29. establishment, administration and termination of remote meetings.  The
  30. product includes basic desktop conferencing utilities which allow
  31. collaborative workers to share and annotate the information in an OS/2(2)
  32. window on the screen.  Under the control of members of the collaborative work
  33. session, windows may be seen by all members of the group.  All users see the
  34. same window content, which can be discussed using office telephones.  With
  35. the appropriate optional hardware and software the users can also see one
  36. another or other real time images in a video window on their screens.

  38. IBM Person to Person/2 Version 1.0 will be marketed under the ULTIMEDIA
  39. brandname.

  47. IBM provides the following Statement of Direction in order to facilitate
  48. customer planning.

  50.  1.  It is IBM's(r) intention that future releases of Person to Person/2
  51.      (*) will run on Microsoft Windows(r*), IBM AIX(r) and Apple System 7
  52.      (r**)operating systems.
  53.  
  54.  2.  It is intended that these releases of Person to Person/2 will inter-
  55.      operate among these platforms when using functions which are common
  56.      to all platforms.

  58.  3.  It is IBMs intention to provide an Application Program Interface
  59.      which will enable collaborative communications across these plat-
  60.      forms.
  61.  
  62.  4.  It is intended that these releases of Person to Person/2 will also
  63.      support applicable CCITT Recommendations for multimedia services
  64.      audiovisual terminals.
  65.  
  66.  5.  This release of Person to Person/2 has ISDN capability.  IBM also
  67.      intends to deliver ISDN capability with the communications manager
  68.      function of OS/2 during the first half of 1993. Once this is deliv-
  69.      ered the Person to Person/2 ISDN function will be enabled.  Between
  70.      now and general availability IBM will make available, to a selected
  71.      number of customers, early versions of these capabilities for test
  72.      and evaluation purposes.

  85.                      The Call Manager logs and displays information about your
  86.                      calls.  Voice calls over the telephone network can be
  87.                      called automatically if a suitable modem is available, or
  88.                      you can dial them yourself.  Incoming calls can be
  89.                      barred, or answered manually or automatically.

  91.                      The Call Manager works in conjunction with the Address
  92.                      Book Manager.  The address book is where you store the
  93.                      name, userid and telephone number of people you wish to
  94.                      contact with Person to Person/2. The Address Book Manager
  95.                      can be used to initiate a conference and set up the data
  96.                      links you need, or you can do this using various confer-
  97.                      encing functions.

  100.                      rored in them, providing a shared workspace that partic-
  101.                      ipants can use with a simple box of drawing tools to
  102.                      enter lines, text and annotate the chalkboard contents.

  104.                      The Chalkboard provides 'What you see is what I see' -
  105.                      interactive, real time, collaboration.

  107.                      Shared clipboard is another way of sharing data from
  108.                      applications and is an extension of the OS/2 clipboard.
  109.                      This enables you to share your clipboard with other par-
  110.                      ticipants, so they can 'Paste' what you 'Copy' into one
  111.                      of their applications.

  113.                      Talk offers a simple way of exchanging text messages with
  114.                      other participants.  These messages can be logged and
  115.                      retrieved, but not all Person to Person/2 conferences
  116.                      need a telephone call.  Some may be across language bar-
  117.                      riers where text is easier to understand, or within a
  118.                      small LAN community where sessions may last for long
  119.                      periods.

  122.                      File Transfer allows transfer of files to and from col-
  123.                      leagues.  Any file on your system can be sent and there
  124.                      is a facility to prefix the files with a message.

  126.                      Video extends the collaborative sharing of data to
  127.                      include the visual sharing of either live or prerecorded
  128.                      images of people or objects.  Video windows are limited
  129.                      to one quarter of the screen, and there is a privacy
  130.                      option which inhibits pictures from your camera being
  131.                      transmitted.
