  27.     I think it is wonderful that the students at American University are
  28.     being shown how to use usenet and are being encouraged to participate
  29.     in discussions here - I really do - but I am concerned that so many of
  30.     the students seem to be asking for reference information (I presume for
  31.     the purpose of writing term papers) without showing any evidence that
  32.     they are undertaking simple steps to find it themselves.

  34.     Questions: 
  35.     [1] is the course instructor showing you the basic reference
  36.     sources for CSCW?  If not, if someone from the class asks the
  37.     readership of this conference to each list the three most impoartant
  38.     CSCW or GDSS journals, you will get a very interesting sampling of
  39.     where you might look.
  40.     [2] what is the readings list for your course?
  41.     [3] does the course instructor read this group?
  42.  
  43.     My feeling is: if a student asks a detailed question in my area of
  44.     experience or interest, I will try to provide some information. 
  45.     However, if a student asks open ended questions about CSCW
  46.     literature in general without showing any evidence that he/she is
  47.     trying to find information on their own, then I do not feel obliged to
  48.     render any assistance.

  50.     Note: this issue is emerging because we are using a brand new form of
  51.     communication and the social protocols are not yet resolved.  I guess
  52.     what I am doing here is suggesting some social protocols.  I welcome
  53.     comment and criticism.

  55.     Another note:  Dr. Stodolsky, might we add a list of important CSCW and
  56.     GDSS journals, proceedings, and books to your FAQ posting?

  63.     Management Information Systems Quarterly (Dec 88 is a must read)
  64.     Communications of the ACM
  65.     Journal of Management Information Systems
  66.     Information Systems Review
  67.     Group Decision and Negotiation

  69.     You might also look at the Proceedings from CSCW.  There was a
  70.     conference in 1986, 1988, 1990, and 1992.  Also check ICIS
  71.     (International Conference on Information Systems) and HICSS (Hawaii
  72.     International Conference on Systems Science) proceedings.
