- We're currently looking at terminal servers to purchase. Since we will
- buy only one server at this time, a detailed evauluation with demos, etc.
- is difficult to justify, so I'm turning to the Net for assistance.
-
- We are looking for the following features:
-
- 1. 16 lines, with limited modem support (DSR/DTR, RTS/CTS - enough to
- properly handshake and disconnect on a Micom Data PBX.
-
- 2. Good TCP/IP support, including SLIP now and PPP in the future. LAT
- support is desirable, but can be a future add-on (if it's an extra
- cost item, we won't buy it now).
-
- 3. Preferably, stand-alone operation, not dependent upon a host for
- more than initial software installation (flash eprom, ROMs, etc).
-
-
- What is the downside of depending upon bootp/tftp for a software
- reload after, say, a power outage, besides the fact that the host will
- likely have a fairly long recovery period itself? In addition, although
- there may be several services accessable to the server, only one host
- is likely to be usable as a software load device (a single point of
- failure). Are there any security considerations, as well?
-
- We are looking at the Xyplex Maxserver 1600, Cisco 516CS, and DEC
- DECServer 700 as primary candidates at the moment. All of these are
- comparatively new models I haven't seen discussed in this forum. The
- last evaluation analysis I saw posted was over a year ago.
-
- Are there any other key features we should be considering, besides
- performance issues such as memory and throughput? Any vendors with
- particularly good software implementations and superior technical
- support?
-
- Please post or email.
- Many thanks.
