- Seems to me that the solutions proposed and actually available for FAX and
- modems share a glaring fault, as pointed out in this group recently; if I
- have a FAX-modem for my computer, I can either monitor for FAX or for modem
- calls, but not for both. What I need, (and what a lot of you seem to want
- also) amounts to the following:
-
- a box containing my FAX-Modem, and a ring detector that operates under
- software control (so I can set up for phone systems with regional differences
- like ring times, busy signals, etc.); on incoming calls, the monitor looks
- for CNG tone, or modem "originate" tones--if it doesn't hear them, the phone
- attached to the box rings, I answer, and talk to my caller. If it does hear
- either of the tones, it selects which software to wake up, and passes the
- call to that software for action.
-
- Now, ideally, I would have either 2 separate lines here, or an overline, but
- this is an older apartment building, and needs $(CDN)3-4000 worth of
- re-wiring to implement that solution, so I NEED a smart box with smart
- software to do the job for me. I would like the box to be modular too, so I
- could upgrade as better firmware and hardware are developed. This solution
- might cost me $(CDN)350 for a 2400/9600 Modem/FAX machine, and another
- $(CDN)150-250 to get to V.32bis, with Group 3, class 2 FAX (or whatever the
- higher end FAX service is today!).
-
- So, how soon can I order this wonder product (the white bread of
- communications). Oh, yeah. I'd really like an intelligent display on it to
- help me solve problems, kinda like the Supra and Practical Peripherals'.
- Thanks.
