  11. In doing some testing, we've connected two ZyXEL 1496E modems together
  12. over standard phone lines at the 16.8K ZyXEL protocol and SLIP, and 
  13. are getting with a 500K file, FTP transfer times of:

  15.     w/no error control or compression    1.5Kb/sec (~1500 cps)
  16.     w/error control and compression        2.9Kb/sec (~2900 cps thruput)
  17.  
  18. We've also fired up some X11/clients remotely and that's proved to be
  19. quite usable, even for graphics.  Granted, it's no 10Mbps ethernet, but
  20. it's usable for most things.

  22. ping (icmp packets) times are slightly inflated with compression turned on, 
  23. varying like so:
