  19. HAYES ANNOUNCES PORTABLE, DESKTOP DATA + FAX MODEM

  23.         ATLANTA, GA, 4 November 1992 -- Hayes Microcomputer
  24. Products, Inc. today announced OPTIMA 144 + FAX144 Pocket Edition. 
  25. This 8.5 ounce, battery pack modem provides data and fax
  26. communications for both portable and desktop use.  For US$599 and
  27. CDN$759, this external modem uses CCITT V.32 bis for 14,400 bit/s
  28. data transmission; CCITT V.42 bis data compression for up to 57,600
  29. bit/s data throughput; and Group 3 fax using CCITT V.17 for 14,400
  30. bit/s fax transmission.

  32.         OPTIMA Pocket Edition provides asynchronous communications
  33. to information systems, corporate hosts, corporate LANs and Group 3
  34. fax machines.  The modem also supports Hayes AutoSync which brings
  35. low cost synchronous connectivity to laptop computers.

  37.         "In addition to being lightweight and easy to carry, the
  38. modem is also very convenient and appropriate for the desktop," said
  39. Hayes President Dennis C. Hayes.  "OPTIMA Pocket Edition is perfect
  40. for employees who are always in and out of the office.  With
  41. features like Hayes AutoSync users can now perform synchronous
  42. communications from a laptop computer to the corporate mainframe."

  44.         The modem comes packaged with RS-232C and telephone cables,
  45. a battery pack, a 9.5 volt wall transformer and a carrying case, as
  46. well as Smartcom EZ and Smartcom FAX communications software for DOS
  47. computers. Smartcom FAX is a command line and menu-driven program
  48. that allows users to fax documents directly from their computers. 
  49. Users may also receive fax messages and then view, rotate, flip,
  50. print or save the message to disk.

  52.         OPTIMA Pocket Edition will be available first quarter 1993
  53. in the U.S., Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean.  A special
  54. offer by Hayes, available in the U.S. and Canada only, allows users
  55. to obtain a free extension of the limited performance warranty to a
  56. total of five years coverage when an OPTIMA product is registered
  57. within 90 days of purchase by mail or through Online With Hayes
  58. bulletin board system.  Smartcom EZ can be upgraded to Smartcom for
  59. Windows V1.0 for US$75/CDN$95 and to Smartcom Exec V3.0 for
  60. US$55/CDN$65.
