  21. This is to announce the release of the Rice Inverse Transliterator
  22. (rit), a free software package for processing text consisting of
  23. Telugu and English.  This software is now in the public domain and is
  24. accessible by anonymous ftp. (Instructions to get the software below.)
  25.  
  26. rit is a typesetting software with the following capabilities:
  27.  
  28. 1. distinguishing English words from Telugu words.
  29. 2. translating some English words into Telugu.
  30. 3. transliterating some English words into Telugu.
  31. 4. correcting spellings in transliterated Telugu.
  32.  
  33. You will find this software useful if 
  34.  
  35. 1. you post or read messages containing Telugu on s.c.i.t
  36. 2. you cannot write Telugu but can speak it
  37. 3. you write letters in Telugu (with English mixed)
  38. 4. you write stories/poems/.. in Telugu
  39. 5. you want a small on-line English-to-Telugu dictionary.

  41. Briefly, this software takes text like
  42.  
  43. maa school ee city lo kallaa peddadi
  44.  
  45. and prints it in Telugu and English appropriately. It can also
  46. translate school into baDi and city into nagaram.
  47.  
  48. To run this software, you need
  49.  
  50. 1. a Unix machine with LaTeX installed on it
  51. 2. and not much more, really.
  52.  
  53. Ideally, you should have a terminal with X windows or openwindows.
  54. Window capability is required only to see the output on the screen.
  55. You can still use the program without xpreviewers like xdvi or xview,
  56. but then you will waste a lot of paper.
  57.  
  58. If you have access to a Sun workstation (with LaTeX), for example, you
  59. should be set. To use this software, you
  60.  
  61. 1. need not know how to use LaTeX
  62. 2. need not have installed TeluguTeX
  63. 3. need not be a Unix expert.

  65. This software is free and is in the public domain, BUT COMES WITH
  66. NO WARRANTY.

  68. To get this software, you need to do the following:
  69.  
  70. If someone else in your site has already installed rit, you need to
  71. get only the file "ritinstall.txt". Otherwise, you need to get only the
  72. file "rit10tar.Z". You can get these files by anonymous ftp from
  73. 134.129.123.1. For example, if you decide to get "rit10tar.Z", you do
  74. the following:

  76. % ftp 134.129.123.1
  77. Type anonymous at the Name prompt and your userid at the Password
  78. prompt. Then,
  79.  
  80. ftp> cd dua1:[dviln03.andhra]
  81. ftp> binary
  82. ftp> get rit10tar.Z
  83. ftp> quit
  84. % uncompress rit10tar.Z
  85. % tar -xf rit10tar
  86. % cd rts
  87. % more README

  89. etc. The file is rit10tar.Z and not rit10tar.z (Notice the upper case
  90. Z). And the directory is dua1: and not dual: outside the square
  91. brackets, it is the numeral 1 (one), inside it is the letter l (ell).

  117. This software is currently configured as a front end to TeluguTeX, but
  118. you are *not* required to have installed TeluguTeX. You are free to
