  17.    In response to Colegate Spinks' request for information on the
  18. 008 field, that field IS an essential part of the USMARC formats; he
  19. can find a description of it in the various format documents, e.g.,
  20. USMARC FORMAT FOR BIBLIOGRAPHIC DATA; USMARC FORMAT FOR AUTHORITY DATA;
  21. etc.   The following description is taken from the bibliographic format
  22. portion of USMARC CONCISE FORMAT FOR BIBLIOGRAPHIC, AUTHORITY, AND
  23. HOLDINGS DATA.   There are similar paragraphs in the authority and
  24. Holdings portions of that volume.

  26. 008 FIXED-LENGTH DATA ELEMENTS (NR)

  28. Forty character positions (00-39) that contain positionally-defined
  29. data elements that provide coded information about the record as a
  30. whole and about special bibliographic aspects of the item being
  31. cataloged.  Character positions 00-17 and 35-39 are defined the same
  32. for all forms of material, with special considerations for position 06.
  33. Character positions 18-34 are generally defined differently for each
  34. specification, although some data elements are defined for more than
  35. one form of material.  In such cases, they occupy the same character
  36. positions wherever they are defined.

  38. Undefined character positions contain either a blank or a fill
  39. character.  All defined character positions must contain either a
  40. defined code or a fill character.
