- About one year ago, we spent about $10,000 get our reference area in
- shape for reference service in an automated environment. The small
- office desk next to the paper catalog was replaced by an island that
- included a phone, an OPAC terminal, and a data jack for me to wheel
- my PC out of my office to get onto the Net via the campus Ethernetwork.
-
- The new ref area is desk height with a lot of shelf space (probably only
- 25 percent of the shelf space is used). I would strongly recommend
- counter height, however. The ref. person serves a patron better by
- looking straight in the eye rather than lower. Eye contact is extremely
- important. Furthermore, we don't have chairs to offer the patron, so
- there is a great difference in eye level.
