  18. The Bibliographic Instruction Section (BIS) of ACRL has established a
  19. Task Force on Strategic Options for Professional Education.  The Task
  20. Force's charge is:
  21.  
  22.    To investigate and identify strategic options, such as
  23.    certification, which may influence and/or encourage
  24.    library schools and employers to offer and develop
  25.    education and continuing education for bibliographic
  26.    instruction; to make recommendations to the BIS
  27.    Executive Committee on their facility and political
  28.    usefulness for the Section in influencing library
  29.    schools and employers; and to recommend a process of
  30.    implementation within the Section.

  32. The BIS Executive Committee has given us one year to investigate options
  33. and write a report.  We want your ideas and comments on what these options
  34. should be.  To this end, we invite list members and any others interested
  35. to email ideas and comments to the list so that we can begin to identify
  36. and discuss a variety of means for achieving these goals.
  37.  
  38. We also invite you to attend an open forum at Midwinter in Denver to
  39. discuss this issue further.  The forum will be held on Saturday, January
  40. 23d, from 11a.m. to 12:30 p.m., during the BIS Advisory Council meeting.
  41. You will be able to find the meeting location in the Midwinter program
  42. by looking for the BIS Advisory Council meeting, 9:30a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
  43. on Saturday, January 23d.  We will report back to the list on draft
  44. options after Midwinter, and again ask for your input before coming up
  45. with a final report.
