- Reference librarians have always had a special relationship with
- encyclopedias. For many of us, they epitomize what attracted us to the
- job in the first place. With this in mind I would like to recommend a
- recent article in the journal Sub-stance by Hilary Clark entitled
- "Encyclopedic Discourse" (#67, 1992, pp 95-110).
- As the title indicates, Clark attempts to analyze the specific
- nature of "encyclopedic" writing using current notions of textuality
- and discourse theory. The article may be a stretch for librarians
- unfamiliar with recent critical theory, but on the other hand, it may
- prove illuminating to readers skeptical that discourse theory could have
- anything substantive to say to Reference librarians about their own
- role in the larger world of knowledge.
