- In response to Rob Ryerson's questions on MVS Performance:
- Apart from "It depends" there are several answers to your questions.
- I have been involved in performance and capacity stuff for quite a few years
- in a number of sites, so if its of any help to you - here goes.
-
- The biggest problem I've come across in the areas above and in tuning in
- general is getting support from above, unless there is a major problem.
- Because its an ongoing job that really does never end, it takes a lot of time.
- Particularly if you don't have the right tools.
-
- Everywhere I have worked, big or small, performance and capacity studies were
- done either by a dedicated performance/capacity person (large sites) or by
- a designated systems programmer. If the person is dedicated they typically
- have a systems background. Application tuning is often different - when it
- comes to rough dasd tuning it is probably systems, but when you incorporate
- Vsam and file placement it is nearly always systems with someone from
- applications involved. If its a systems person it is often the manager.
-
- It most certainly is a function of shop size, as a dedicated person is always
- going to have time to do it properly and to build up a history, whereas using
- systems part-time may result in a job half-done due to other priorities - if
- the system is having technical problems then performance won't be their no. 1.
- In a small shop dedicating a person to performance would be a luxury.
-
- Experience is also critical, as it is difficult to take on this sort of task
- with little or no background. Ideally the person should have a systems
- background or understanding, and an understanding of your applications
- environments (cics, cobol, vsam, db2, or whatever).
-
- Specifically, in our shop this is how it works. I manage the systems pgmers
- and also do the capacity and performance analysis. We have a large CICS
- online environment using PL1 and a little cobol and assembler. I have
- 3 staff and we also will be supporting RS6000s as well as MVS/ESA. If
- changes need to be made then it really depends where they are. For instance,
- my favorite area is Vsam tuning and when I did an analysis this year I came
- up woth a bunch of changes to be made to the files. The changes were made
- by the technical support people in our MIS group not by systems.
-
- If you are interested, there is an international group that addresses
- capacity and performance issues for IBMs and Open systems called The
- Computer Measurement Group and they have local chapters that meet
- regularly. This is a good place to get advice. IBM also has a conference
- once a year now called the Large Systems Performance Conference. The CMG
- US conference is in Reno for a week from Dec 7th.
-
- Hope this was of some help.
