  27.           The  1993  NATIONAL  CONFERENCE  on  PROBLEM  SOLVING  ACROSS THE
  28.           CURRICULUM  will be held at Hobart  and William Smith Colleges in
  29.           Geneva,  New  York,  June  24-26, 1993.    The  conference offers
  30.           opportunities  to exchange  ideas about  teaching problem solving
  31.           and  critical thinking in ALL curriculum areas.  Presentations in
  32.           the following areas are suggested:
  33.  
  34.                                The Expanded Classroom
  35.                       Total Quality Management in the Classroom
  36.                 Planning, Implementing and Institutionalizing Change
  37.                      Problem Solving Using Electronic Networking
  38.             Challenging the Standards in Writing, Mathematics and Science
  39.                              The Non-Traditional Student
  40.                         Modeling the Problem Solving Process
  41.                   Developing Learning Skills in the Core Curriculum
  42.                                 Cooperative Learning
  43.                            Faculty Mentoring/Team Teaching
  44.                          Teaching Styles and Learning Styles
  45.                             Writing Across the Curriculum
  46.                Critical Thinking and Non-Quantitative Problem Solving
  47.  
  48.           Proposals for four types of presentations are requested:
  49.  
  50.           1)   20-minute     discussions/demonstrations     of    classroom
  51.                innovations,  faculty development activities, and results of
  52.                educational  research.   Use of  instructional technology is
  53.                strongly  encouraged in  these sessions.   Need  for special
  54.                hardware or software requirments should be specified.
  55.  
  56.           2)   90-minute  workshops  focusing on  classroom implementation.
  57.                These  workshops are intended to be hands-on sessions for 10
  58.                -  15 participants to explore curriculum materials and novel
  59.                delivery  techniques.  Computer labs  and seminar rooms will
  60.                be   available   for   workshops.      Available   computing
  61.                environments  include  VAX/VMS, MS-DOS,  Macintosh platforms
  62.                and Bitnet/Internet access.
  63.  
  64.           3)   Directed   discussions/brainstorming  sessions  centered  on
  65.                specific problems in higher education.  Presenters will open
  66.                the  session by reviewing the  problem and then facilitating
  67.                discussion.     These   sessions  will   take  place  during
  68.                conference luncheons.

  70.           4)   Posters for the Hall of Innovation, described below.

  72.                                      GUIDELINES
  73.  
  74.           Prospective  presenters must  submit a  75-word abstract suitable
  75.           for   the  conference  program  booklet   by  January  15,  1993,
  76.           preferably  by  disk in  WordPerfect 5.1  form.   Receipt  of all
  77.           abstracts will be acknowledged.  Final decisions on acceptance of
  78.           presentation  proposals will  be made  by February  15, 1993; all
  79.           authors  will be notified.  Final  papers for the 1993 conference
  80.           proceedings  must be submitted by April  1, 1993, also by disk in
  81.           WordPerfect 5.1 form.

  83.           The "Hall of Innovation" is a gallery display of curriculum ideas
  84.           and  effective  techniques  for teaching  problem  solving.   All
  85.           presenters are invited to exhibit in poster form a description of
  86.           their  presentation. Each poster will include a photograph of the
  87.           presenter  and  a  description of  the  innovation.   Exceptional
  88.           poster  displays will be recognized  during the conference awards
  89.           dinner.   [Materials will be supplied for those wishing to create
  90.           a  poster during the conference;  polaroid pictures will be taken
  91.           upon arrival at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.]
