- In response to some of the thoughts that are coming through i would like
- to offer the idea that multimedia will not replace in total or even large
- parts existing teaching methods but compliment them. There are many ways
- of learning about the same topic of which Multimedia is one of the
- possibilities. The thing to look out for are those occassions when multi-
- media applications start to do it better, what curriculum areas can it
- enhance. People are still pushing the boundaries on this matter and so
- tommorrow holds new possbilities. I have just recieved a report from a
- person that is using Hypercard with video graphics to teach tertiary
- chemistry. He has found that time on computer has replaced the need for
- lecturing on a lot of the fundamental chemistry teaching and has provided
- more time for teaching applied chemistry which the course is about.

- The other direction for multimedia is not in the way teachers can present
- material to students but that the students can use multimedia to organize
- their learning in a product form that they can share with other. Research
- is now starting to consider how such an application can extend students
- cognitive and meta cognitive development. I see this as an extension to
- what databases are achieving in the classroom. The other handy aspect of
- student constructed multimedia is that it reflects how students conceptual-
- ize the subject matter and thus allowing the teacher to assess where children
- are at, what they have learned and thereby develop appropriate lessons to
- build on what they have just done.
