  16.        Macintosh can do today.  So it is possible to publish a local
  17.        CWIS, and connect to others everywhere with gopher.

  24.     Or, to put in a more interesting way, I on my Macintosh Plus
  25.     (hypothetical, as I'm on an SE/30) could connect to, oh, say
  26.     Tokyo University and peruse some of their papers on quantum
  27.     physics, at the same time searching through Harvard's name
  28.     server (or program of comparable function) for that guy named
  29.     Smith I met last year at the Conference in Boulder, etc.

  32.     ago...all it takes is more CWIS's....and more bandwidth.

  38. I think it's more convoluted -- while you are reading the papers
  39. on quantum mechanics on that machine in Tokyo, your colleague in
  40. St. Martins is viewing meeting notes you are editing stored in another
  41. folder in your SE.

  43. Yes, Gopher does contain a lot of the ideas presented in the Apple
  44. Knowledge Navigator commercial.  Or in Ted Nelson's The Literary
  45. Machine.

  47. In this model, the network is desktop-to-desktop, or notebook-to-
  48. notebook, or pocket organizer to pocket organizer.  It leads to a
  49. shift from Campus Wide INFORMATION SYSTEMS to CAMPUS WIDE Information
  50. System.  Everybody becomes an information provider; every desk
  51. becoms a file server.
