- I have never worked in a library where a paging system is used, but
- have been amused at the annoyance of patrons when they call the
- reference desk to inquire if we could page such and such a person.
- One time, a building manager almost blew out my ear drums by saying:
- "(Depletive), this building is going to get all flooded by the
- time we find her. She left the taps in her room on." You would
- think building officers were empowered to keep duplicate keys.
- I guess that can be a page in the chapter of building management.
-
- Sometimes there are real emergencies that paging systems could
- be used. There was a case when a student's mother had passed
- away, and there were family members in the lrary looking for
- her. I did walk them through each floor our huge edifice. The
- student was not studying in the building. It was time consuming
- to walk them around, but I thought it was a noble venture.
-
- The thing about paging is that many a time, the person who is
- being sought is not in the library. The call to the library
- may be one of the many calls to several units on campus.
- Once again, it's like one of the many pages in the process
- of finding.
-
- Many happy paging to us all.
