- This is a very important point. Computer storage media, and the data formats
- on it, come and go with dizzying speed. To compare, pick up a book printed 200
- years ago. It probably has just as much information to impart to you as it did
- to its first readers. Ditto for a 100 yr old photo, if it was fixed properly.
- Now, try and read a computer diskette or mag tape from 15 years ago. Pretty
- challenging, most of the time. You can really have fun with punched cards or
- paper tape. Even if the media is in pristine condition, new technologies just
- aren't backward compatible more than a few generations. Digital can mean
- perfect reproduction, bit for bit -- just don't imagine that today's currently
- used formats are going to be readable by anyone other than a researcher in a
- computer museum after ten or twenty years. -Steve Rothman
