- I am not aware of any that provide EVERYTHING you or I might want. After
- nearly 2 years of running Waffle as a DOOR on my 7-year-old PCBoard-based
- system, very few users have had the patience to master Waffle despite the
- promise and high-level of expectations re: access to Internet/Usenet. So
- I think your appraisal of that package is accurate.
-
- However, I think we're approaching a combination of facilities that pleases
- quite a few types of callers:
-
- 1) PCBoard as a base remains my mainstay and the familiar stomping ground for
- most callers for multiple conference participation, mail door access, and
- access to downloadable files.
-
- 2) The Waffle usage as a door, coupled with a "sub-door" that I have written,
- called ZipNews, allows callers access to newsgroups as simply as with
- Qwikmail -- a caller logs into the Waffle system, issues the command ZIPNEWS
- and all groups per the callers JOIN file are scanned for new articles...the
- resulting text file is ZIPped and the caller downloads via Zmodem. It's
- over very quickly and the callers enjoy bypassing the Waffle learning curve.
-
- 3) Our addition of UUCP-based newsfeeds have attracted many others. Most of
- these folks are ones that braved the Waffle learning curve, but prefer the
- feel of being "on the net" by unattended calls to the new front-end we've
- written which shunts them into a Waffle-supported UUCP access. These
- callers are using the UUPC and SNEWS packages (some have added PC-ELM to
- their setups).
-
- So, we're using Waffle, but not as the main package. Access from the
- front-end for UUCP or access as a door, to ZipNews, etc., work pretty well
- for us.
