- I observed an interesting 3d illusion this sunday morning while
- sitting in church. I had a bible in my hand and noticed that the
- embossed lettering on the cover appeared to be floating .25 inch above
- the cover.
-
- Details:
- The bible was a low cost NIV version, black with fake-leather binding.
- The "leather" texture consisted of dominantly vertical groves in a
- random like distribution. The cross-section of the cover was
- something like this (only rounded on the top):
-
- __ _________ _____ ______
- \ / \ / \ /
- \/ \/ V
-
- <-------- .5 inch -------------->
-
- The lettering was gold-colored stamped letters with maybe .02 to .05
- inch depression.
-
- The lighting was a series of hanging decorative bulbs 20 feet up and
- seperated by 10 to 15 feet. The illusion only occurred when the cover
- of the bible caught the "glare" from the overhead lights.
-
- I conjecture that the point-source nature of the light caused the
- textured cover to appear shifted right-eye vs. left-eye as the light
- bounced off the curved structures. The embossed letters had no curved
- surfaces and thus had no differences to fool my depth perception.
-
- This kind of illusion would appear to be highly light-source
- dependent, so it probably wouldn't have much commercial use, but it
- was interesting--a stable 3d effect with no funny viewers and no
- eye-training required.
