- I assume from the question that the rod is browken by two independent
- hammer thrusts distributed evenly across the rod.

- The rods form a triangle if:

- no piece has a length of l/2 or greater. In other words, the piece on the
- left has a length less than half, the piece on the right has length less
- than a half, and the middle piece also.

- If you now draw the square of dimensions lxl illustrating the possiblities
- of the first and second cut, the acceptable region turns out to be two
- isosceles right angled triangles (my ANSI editor is not up to this) and the
- area is 1/8 l^2, i.e. probability is an eighth.
