- Let a_k = exp(k/N) where 0 <= k < N and let S1 and S2 be two sums
- over two disjoint subsets of the a_k. By Lindemann's Thm,
- S1 - S2 can never vanish but is there a decent lower bound on
- |S1 - S2| ? In particular, 1/N^O(1) ?

- KD>I believe the story went something like this:
-
- KD>The Tolkien mailing list was started about a year before The Big
- KD>Split. This drained the original rec.arts.sf.lovers of Tolkien-related
- KD>postings, so when the split arrived, very few could see the need for a
- KD>special tolkien group.
-
- Aww, damn! I can't subscribe to lists. Guess I'll have to talk to my sysop
- again...and again...and again.... Is it (either of them, actually)
- interesting?
-
- KD>Also in general people was opposed to special-groups like Heinlein or
- KD>Tolkien.
-
- Well, perhaps it could have been called Middle-earth. After all, there's
- enough stuff there to keep us occupied for decades to come!
-
- Thanks for the info,
