- WASHINGTON (AP) _ In a development sure to raise the
- temperature in the controversy over Barbie's "Math is tough" message,
- Mattel has acknowledged that a disgruntled employee has inserted a
- number of contentious messages into several thousand Barbie dolls.
-
- These messages are said to include "Meat is murder",
- "Abortion kills babies", and "Implement resolution 242".
-
- Mattel is attempting to recall the "tainted" Barbies, but
- since each doll speaks four messages randomly drawn from a pool of
- nearly 300, officials fear that it will be impossible to identify
- which Barbies may cause offense.
-
- One option that is reportedly under consideration is for the
- company to deliberately release a similar number of "counter-Barbies",
- dolls with messages calculated to placate anyone who may have been
- offended by the spoof messages. Exactly what counter-messages will
- be used has not yet been finalised, but Mattel spokesperson April
- Furst said that "Beef: real food for real people",
- "Abortion is a woman's right", and "I hate Arabs" are under consideration.
-
- "We hope this will demonstrate that Mattel has no political axe
- to grind, and so make everyone happy", Ms Furst continued.
