  25. In logic courses (where I tended to spend a *lot* of time on issues
  26. of translation to and from English) I emphasized as a fundamental
  27. principle of translation that one should attempt to have the structure
  28. of the formal representation mirror (as closely as possible) the
  29. structure of the English.  In particular, one should not end up with
  30. a formal representation containing negations if there were no explicit
  31. negations in the original English.  Cleaving to this principle avoids
  32. a number of nasty confusions and problems.  Among other things, it
  33. tends to remove *inference* from the translation process and keep
  34. it where it belongs (post-translation, in the formalism).  And this
  35. is particularly important as the complexity of the sentence to
  36. be translated increases.
