- Two observations on tweaking out a few more bytes of RAM in NB4.
-
- (1) I reported earlier that ADDMEM, which grabs about 90 Kbytes of idle
- memory from the video card for use in text mode, crashed with Lingua.
- On the advice of Paul Bodin, I tried loading NB4 with the /b switch. It
- works. I now have an extra 90 Kbytes (approx., depending on unknown
- factors) in both Lingua and ASCII NB4. The screen goes briefly weird
- while it is in process of switching things, but in edit mode, it's fine.
- I think it runs marginally slower, but for 90 Kbytes, I can live with it.
- Thanks, Paul.

- (2) The old trick of shelling out to DOS and reentering still seems to
- gain some RAM, though less than it did with NB 3.1. I used to get about
- 25K out of the procedure; now I seem to get about 10. However, there is
- another trick I've run across. Switching between symbol sets seems to
- gain K's too. I loaded NB in Lingua mode, F7 reported 161 K; switched
- to ASCII mode, F7 reported 175 K. The difference is *NOT* due to
- lower memory requirements of ASCII mode, however: When I loaded in
- ASCII mode, F7 reported 162 K; a switch to Lingua mode reported 175 K.
- (All of this with the same printer activated, of course.)
