- This is, unfortunately, a good example of the new overlay management
- in NB 4.0 interfering with memory management techniques that had
- become common practice among some NB 3.X users. NB 4.0's overlays
- interact in a much more complex fashion than was the case with NB 3.X,
- and furthermore they are modified at the time of system startup in a
- manner that is dependent upon the status of other system variables.
- They cannot simply be loaded and unloaded as we could do before. Once
- you have unloaded all those overlays to free up more memory I know of
- no way to reliably load and use the printer driver--the program must be
- restarted to do this. If the overlay management commands are in
- NBSTART.INT then you will never be able to use the printer drivers!
-
- Perhaps some of the wiser heads among us will eventually be able to
- figure out how to accomplish these memory miracles with NB 4.0, too,
- but until then we will be stuck.
-
- Please note that now both Orbis and Ibid can be loaded at the same
- time without these memory gyrations (unlike NB 3.1). Note also that
- these memory and overlay functions have never been documented by
- Dragonfly/NBI--these techniques have taken advantage of *undocumented*
- properties of the XyWrite editor engine. The fact that they no longer
- work the same way with NB 4.0 does not remove any *documented* features.
