- * RESULTS OF THE OCTOBER 92 INTERNET HUNT *
- * *
- * (warning: long message, feel free to pound the delete key) *
- ***************************************************************
-
- Here it is, at long last, the results of the second monthly Hunt.
- (Turnaround time would have been much faster, but I've been out
- conferencing myself to death.)
-
- And the winner is...
-
- Peter Scott
- Manager of Small Systems
- Univ. of Saskatchewan Libraries
-
- ...who scored a perfect 46 points in an entry dated
- Oct 1, 4:43 CST. Congratulations Peter!
-
- HUNT STATISTICS
- ---------------
-
- We had a few more players this time around. Now we're up to
- 19 entries, and about 50 - 60 assorted comments.
-
- POINTS OF INTEREST
- ------------------
-
- It was clear that many people have latched on to Scott Yanoff's
- burgeoning list of sources. This can be accessed in several ways.
- Finger yanoff@csd4.csd.uwm.edu for some of them. A couple of good
- gopher sites (other than Mom gopher in Minnesota, of course), are the
- MSEN gopher maintained by Ed Vielmetti; and the Univ. of South
- Carolina, Dept. of Math gopher maintained by Brygg Ullmer. Both good
- starting points for information. Finally, you can also get a lot of
- information on the HyTelnet system at the University of Saskatchewan,
- (telnet access.usask.ca), maintained by this months winner!
-
- There are loads of other good services, but these are all I have
- room for this month.
-
- We got the first answer that used a Panda. Panda is an information
- service out of the University of Iowa that's based on gopher. See
- question number 10.
-
- The question on where to find land use maps (# 6), was not as
- difficult as I had expected. I was interested in the Global Land
- Information System which was tough to find, and completely overlooked
- the USGS Earth Science Data Service which answers the question.
-
- The question on where an Argentine user could telnet to get gopher
- access turned out to be a little tougher than expected. Those who
- found a telnettable (?) gopher server in South America got full
- credit (based on a strict interpretation of the question).
-
- The answers were much better this time around. Almost everyone
- remembered that an address alone is not much help if the data is
- buried deep inside some arcane directory structure. Good job by
- all.
-
- I had fun (and so did others), with the extra credit question.
- I'll try to scrape something up for November as well.
-
- THE USUAL
- ---------
-
- If any players would like to see their individual scores, please
- feel free to drop me a line.
-
- I'm totally open to suggestions. Some suggestions have already been
- incorporated, others are still being debated.
-
- I will not post any answer that utilizes an access method that is
- licensed to a particular subset of Net users. Anyone who has cruised
- the Net at any length has discovered licensed resources that are
- accessible to anyone. I will not expose those resources to further
- unlicensed access. For example, you will not see any mention of
- access to dictionaries, as I am currently unaware of any in the public
- domain.
-
- Thanks to all who contributed comments, and special thanks to the
- players! Thanks to you, we're learning more every month.

- tells me that there's a network over there that mathematicians use

- 6. (8) I'm looking for land use maps of the United States, and I heard
- somewhere that I can use a network resource to find out what's
- available, and how to order them. What is this resource?
-

- about Gopher. She's interested in setting up a gopher server at her
- university. Are there any gophers in that part of the world that she
- can telnet to and see what it looks like?
-
- (Rick: What I was after here was a local gopher that provided
- telnet access. The 'friend' could telnet back to the US to get a
- gopher, and then back to South America, but response time is
- much better with a more local telnet. Full credit to those that
- got South American telnettable (?) gophers.)

- Basketball. Jeez, Rick, that was the easiest one!
- ---
- I can't offer info from the net but good european prejudice :),
- how about Baseball as a tip?
- ---
- The often overlooked best source: someone who knows. Ask someone!
- Charlie (docmaps@arizvms.bitnet -- an internet resource, right) says
- its drinking beer but that you might think it was basketball. To find
- out for sure, ask cgates@westmont.edu who he seemed to think you might
- be acquainted with :-)

- SHE writes: "His favorite sport is definitely basketball. He
