I've seen small fluorescent bulb replacement units for solar-charged sidewalk
lamps in hardware stores such as True Value and Home Depot stores. Each lamp
housing has a solar cell mounted on top which charges a small ni-cad battery
pack inside. The higher voltage needed to power the tiny fluorescent bulb
is provided by an equally small power inverter module inside the lamp housing.
Replacement bulbs and other parts were on the shelf next to the whole lamps.
