My 79 'bird has a pinging problem which is worst when the throttle is
barely open. If I am driving along about 65mph there is significant pinging
which will go away if I ease into the throttle or floor it. Actually, there
is still some pinging when I do that, but it is far less. I have checked the
timing, EGR valve, and replaced a bunch of emissions hoses, but no luck.
Does this sound like a problem with the distributor? Too much vacuum advance? Any advice would be appreciated. Also, the car pings when cold as well as when hot.
