  13. Hi.  My 1986 Toyota Corolla with only 50,000 Km
  14. requires regular valve clearance adjustments to 
  15. silence a valve ticking noise that develops every
  16. few months.    The local Toyota dealer says I 
  17. need a new rocker shaft assembly installed for a
  18. total of about $400.00.    Another dealer says
  19. it might be one of the following:
  20.  
  21.   1.  Rocker shaft arm worn.   No need to replace.
  22.       No need to worry about long term damage to 
  23.       engine if left to tick.   Surprising since 
  24.       car only has 50,000 km
  25.  
  26.   2.  Valve stem off center where it meets the 
  27.       rocker shaft arm.   Should be fixed.

  29.   3.  Carbon build-up near or under valve.   Try
  30.       cleaning out the carbon by slowly pouring
  31.       about 1/2 cup of transmission fluid into 
  32.       carburator.    Do this outside as there will
  33.       be lots of smoke.

  35. The carbon build-up theory is possible since the 
  36. car is city-driven only and was once diagnosed with
  37. badly carbon-fouled spark plugs due to a clogged
  38. air filter.

  40. I am looking for opinions from everyone out there!
  41. Has anyone been through anything similar to this 
  42. with their Toyota (it's an 8-valve 1600cc engine)?
  43. Is pouring transmission fluid into the carburator 
  44. a good carbon-cleaning trick or a waste of time and 
  45. possibly damaging?
